Movie review: Eli Roth’s slasher flick ‘Thanksgiving’ an underbaked holiday dish Gather ’round the table, horror fans, because Eli Roth is finally serving up his long-gestating holiday feast: the seasonal slasher movie “Thanksgiving.” The idea for this film got rolling some 16 years ago with the 2007 Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature “Grindhouse,” in which Roth and his longtime friend Jeff Rendell cooked up a joke trailer inspired by their love of themed horror movies and a Massachusetts childhood spent just down the road from Plymouth, the site of the first Thanksgiving. When horror fans first got their eyes on the “Thanksgiving” trailer, it sparked a fervent appetite for the whole meal, but with the full film finally hitting theaters, after 16 years of discussion and development, it proves the adage — also true for Thanksgiving meals — that there can be too much of a good thing.A mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts, in “Thanksgiving.” (Pief Weyman/Sony Pictures/TNS)“Thanksgiving” is an ent...

Joe Soucheray: There they were, bobbing and weaving, ruffians at my window Typing only casually the other morning on some commentary of political despair, having surrendered the week prior, I noticed a rafter of wild turkeys assembled at my ground-level window. It gave me a start. It looked like these well-armored creatures could smash through the glass if they were so inclined.Joe SoucherayA murder of crows, a skulk of foxes, a colony of rabbits, a rafter of turkeys. I could add a passel of possums to our burgeoning urban wildlife, but I have seen only one and one was enough. We have long discussed turkeys in St. Paul. They were brought here years ago by Johnny Appleseed or some such folklore and now Minnesota has 225,000 wild turkeys, according to something called 8BillionTrees.com. They have been around and it’s not unusual to see them all over the city. There are people who occasionally don’t get their mail, or get it late, because a turkey can hold a grudge against a postal carrier. To see them at my window so close was alarming. They bobbed and weaved ...

Retired philharmonic executive lists Cherry Creek penthouse for $8.5 million Valerie and Gil Clausen kept it in the family when they created their Cherry Creek North penthouse in the 250 Columbine building. Valerie, a violinist and retired executive director of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, and Gil, a retired gold mining executive, chose the penthouse in 2016 to simplify their lives. They bought the seventh-floor, 4,500-square-foot home for $5 million when the building was unfinished and were able to work with Valerie’s sister Jennifer Tate, principal architect of Tate + Burns in Essex, Connecticut, to design a warm, modern space reminiscent of the sisters’ childhood home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “What a treat it was to get to work with her. We could customize certain elements to suit our aesthetic,” Valerie Clausen said.Together, they created a space with 13-foot ceilings, a guest wing separated from the primary suite, a dedicated office space, more storage space, and an open, functional kitchen separated from the living room with an Ortal gas fire...

49ers vs. Bucs: Five keys to beating Tampa Bay ahead of NFC gauntlet

49ers vs. Bucs: Five keys to beating Tampa Bay ahead of NFC gauntlet SANTA CLARA – Sorry, did you say the 49ers are hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then playing four days later at the Seattle Seahawks for NFC West supremacy? Is this that 2022 playoff push all over again? Not that the 49ers are complaining, but, gosh, the NFL scheduling czar sure doesn’t win points for originality, other than to use this Sunday’s 49ers-Bucs game as the launching point for a gauntlet that should dictate the 49ers’ playoff direction.Last year, the 49ers beat the Bucs 35-7 in Brock Purdy’s starting debut, then extended their win streak in Seattle with a NFC West-clinching win on a Thursday night in Seattle, on Dec. 15.Title talk is premature at just past this season’s halfway mark, with the 49ers (6-3) are tied atop the division with Seattle. A week ago, the 49ers were coming off a bye and fuming over a three-game losing streak. They took out their frustrations last Sunday in a 34-3 rout at the Jacksonville Jaguars, who entered on an NFL-best five-game win st...

It is hard not to be offended when listening to these individuals speak. This is another example of outside influences trying to divide and conquer Indian tribes. We will not let history repeat itself.”Thompson, one of t...

Opinion: Don’t let Congress overturn California’s animal welfare law Allowing pigs to turn around. It may seem like a modest goal, but it’s taken decades of advocacy for this basic humane standard to become law in California. Yet now, some politicians are doing anything they can to undo this work—including overturning elections—to achieve their goals.Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan. and Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, introduced the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act in June. This proposed legislation claims to “prevent States and local jurisdictions from interfering with the production and distribution of agricultural products in interstate commerce.” But what it really aims to do is overturn the results of California’s 2018 and Massachusetts’ 2016 ballot measures where voters banned outdated and cruel practices in farm animal husbandry. The public is overwhelmingly in favor of humane treatment of livestock. The ballot measures EATS Act proponents are trying to overturn in California and Massachusetts garnered 63% and 78% support in the respecti...
